Coding Mobile Apps with Thunkable in Community Issues

First Quarter Community Issues students completed their final projects to solve a problem in their community.  After researching the problems identified, they identified ways to solve the problems using a mobile app.  The students individually or in groups up to 3 designed and coded a mobile app to address the problem.  Finally, they presented their ideas and apps to their classmates who rated them on the design, functionality, and the apps potential impact.  

Topics the students tackled included smoking, teen pregnancy, obesity, babysitting, eating choices, endangered animals, depression, and LGBTQ+ youth.  .  

The top 3 apps based on the students’ feedback, in no particular order are:  

• Depression Revolution by Aryssa Trotter

The main point of this app is to help depression, and lower the number of people who have depression. Depression Revolution has links to hotlines, therapists, and tips to help reduce depression.

• Last Resort by Marlo Valdez, Tenley Read, and Olivia Lange

Last Resort is made to support LGBTQ+ youth with local events, quotes, and links to hotlines.  

• HEA (Helping Endangered Animals) by Gavin Foster, Zachary Zuverink, and Tyson Goetze

HEA was made to help endangered animals by having users look at the cute pictures, learn more about them and then donate to help save them.
